Somebody finally graduated.

Ann Arbor, MI | May 1-4, 2014 | After 5 long year of graduate school, 2 in Maryland and 3 in Michigan, Jon finally finished. I’m not sure who was more excited- him or me. 🙂

I flew in on Thursday evening for the festivities. We ate dinner at the new Mexican place around the corner from Jon’s place with his family. Not a bad evening when it’s full of guacamole, beans and swirl margaritas.

Friday we were all up bright and early for the first ceremony, doctoral hooding. It was a little chilly and drizzly outside and we had to wait in line to get into the ceremony space. We all crammed into the mezzanine level seats hoping to get a good view of the stage (which then proved to be a little difficult with all the folks trying to get photos in the aisles). However I did manage to get a few shots of Jon crossing the stage and we did end up taking lots of photos later on. After this ceremony we headed over to Red Hawk for lunch where I had a delicious pork sandwich on open face cornbread. Yum!

That afternoon was the second ceremony for the school of music, theatre and dance. We got front row balcony seats for this one – much better view. And this was quite the ceremony. They broke up the speaking with performances- which were awesome! Then we got to see Jon walk across the stage again for a repeat hooding and I got better shots this time. A reception, followed by more photos in the drizzly rain before we headed home to change for dinner. We headed to downtown Ypsi as Ann Arbor was too crowded with graduation folks. Dinner at Aubree’s consisted of roasted brussel sprouts with bacon. Must learn how to recreate this. SO GOOD.

Saturday was filled with wedding errands – suits and rings check! And then we went to see Spiderman 2. I was underwhelmed but still glad we got to see it. Hopefully the other summer superhero blockbusters will be better. Dinner was at Wurst Bar- one of our favorite spots- and I had their special Mac Attack burger. Mac and cheese on a burger (heck yes!) and sweet potato tots!

On Sunday we decided to go see Captain America – still good the second time. Marvel is doing a great job these days. Looking forward to the second Avengers! After the movie we found a local winery to spend the afternoon – Sandhill Crane Winery. After a long tasting and a bottle of red we headed back to Ypsilanti for dinner at Sidetrack. I had some delicious mini burgers and fries. A great food weekend for sure and of course many celebrations for Jon. Thanks Ann Arbor.
