So since my last training update I’ve had a half marathon (Alexandria) where I didn’t PR and then have slowed a little of my training off and focused on strength for the last few weeks. I was pretty bummed about not getting close to the PR goal for Alexandria but various factors weren’t in my favor.
A late start plus heat and humidity (when you don’t really train with those!) make for missing my goal by about 5 minutes. I didn’t have my worst half but it sure felt like it finishing the race. I wrote up an entire recap with my likes and dislikes about that race.
Since I was off my game I decided to kick up the strength training this go round and hope that will help with my future races. I’ve been working with the 21DFX program which features plyometrics, upper body, lower body, pilates, yoga and cardio. Those short intense workouts coupled with speed work runs will hopefully let me hit my goals going forward. To learn more about the program check out the post where I reviewed the workouts.
Last weekend Jon and I were visiting friends in Chicago and luckily our rental house was around the corner from the Lakefront Trail. I went for a couple of runs while we were there and the headwind coming off the lake when running North is rough. We changed it up on Day 2 of running to get the hard part over first and cruise into the later miles. That worked much better. We were prepping for this coming Saturday’s Bellin Run 10K in Green Bay. It’s supposed to be a huge 10K and I’m looking forward to exploring Green Bay as well as nearby Door County.
This week I’m planning on focusing completely on short speedy runs to get my pace in place for this weekend. My 10K current PR is 59 minutes even and I would LOVE to break that. Fingers crossed this week’s runs and strength workouts will get the job done. Once that’s complete it’s time to amp back up the longer weekend runs to prep for RNR Chicago in July.
Hopefully next time I check in, I’ll have broken my 10K time and be on the way to smashing the half time. Of course there’s always the over arching goal of a sub 2 hour half that’s always on my mind. We’ll see how it goes!
